STORY OF DIWALI:

Bhoomi Devi had a son named Naraka. Eventhough Naraka was the son of a divinity, his nature was like a demon. Naraka was powerful and he took pleasure in terrorizing the inhabitants of the three worlds. After acquiring the immense power from a blessing given by Lord Brahma after a severe penance, Narakasura raided and plundered the Kingdoms of the three worlds. He kidnapped women and enslaved them his own personal harem. When he heard that Indra, the king of the devas, had thousands of divine elephants in his army, he decided that he must have them and he attacked the heavens. Indra helplessly watched Naraka's minions plunder the heavens. Naraka himself began pursuing  the devas.

While pursuing the devas, a glimmering object far away caught his attention. When he realized that it was the mother of the devas, Mother Aditi's earrings,  he attacked her and grabbed it. Indra was humiliated and wanted revenge for the attack upon his mother.  Indra knew that none other than Krishna could kill Narakasura. So he decided to approach him for help. Indra reached Krishna's palace. Krishna was with his consort Sathyabama.

INDRA : Oh Krishna! Save me!! I have been completely humiliated. My mother has been assaulted and Indraloka has been plundered. I am totally helpless. That demon Narasura has to be killed. The whole of devaloka is in darkness. Only you can kill him. Please bring light light to our lives, Krishna! Only you can kill him. Please bring light to our lives, Krishna!

But Naraka had a boon that he would face death only at the hands of his mother Bhudevi. So, Krishna asks his wife Sathyabama, the reincarnation of Bhudevi, to be his charioteer in the battle with Naraka.

Krishna : Sathyabama it is time for me to leave. I have to slay the Rakshasa, who has humiliated Mother Aditi.

Sathyabama : My Lord, please let me accompany you.

Krishna : Indra, please don't worry about this any more, Narakasura's time has come.

Krishna summoned his chariot along with Sathyabama and made his way to Naraka's fortress. An impneetratrable range of magic mountains surrounded Naraka's fortress. The mountain formed a barrier as soon as Krishna tried to enter the fortress. Krishna, unperturbed, huried his mace of the barrier and shattered the entire mountain range with one blow. A downpour of magical weapons rained on him. Krishna fired a series of arrows and destroyed all the weapons and reached Naraka's fortress finally.

Naraka's palace was guarded by the five headed demon Mura. Then Krishna picked up his flying discus and hurled it towards Mura and beheaded him. Now Krishna reached Narasura's fortress and meets Narakasura.

Krishna : Narakasura, Mura is no more. Now it is time for  you to face me.

Narakasura : Krishna! I will slay you and completely demolish indraloka and the entire Universe. Don't try your tricks with me.

Krishna : you heartless Rakshasa! Come and face me if you are brave enough! After long hours of battle, krishna was unable to beat Narakasura because of the boon granted by his mother. On seeing this Sathyabama takes the bow and aims the arrow at Naraka and killed him. Later Lord Krishna reminds her of the boon she had sought as Bhudevi.

Now the whole of Devaloka was illuminated. Indra beamed with happiness and announced that this day will be celebrated with lights throughout the Universe.

Hence this day is called as Diwali, the festival of Lights and Happiness.
